Summary of Project and Key Findings:
Work was undertaken to develop prototype processing technologies to make extracts from avocado seeds and skins. Processes were further developed for the separation of avocado skin and seed from mixed by-product.
Skins and seeds were processed separately by pressing, drying and extracting using a variety of solvents. Analysis of the composition of these extracts was performed using a variety of methods depending on whether the extract was lipophilic or hydrophilic.
The seed lipophilic extract was rich in acetogenins, with unknown properties. The skin hydrophilic extract was rich in polyphenols. An economic analysis was performed to estimate the cost of production of target extracts from seed and skin.
