Summary of Project and Key Findings:
Hemp seed by-products were successfully converted into fat-free, water-soluble peptides with excellent functionality, sensory characteristics and some bioactivity using a scalable and cost-effective process, and this was performed at lab and pilot scale. Other by-products were pre-treated using various technologies and extracted for phenolics and flavonoids. Pretreatments were shown to significantly improve the extraction yields without drastically changing the profile of the extracts. The bioactivity of the peptides and flavonoid concentrates were characterised using relevant bioassays and these showed some promising results.
