Summary of Project and Key Findings:
The project involved detailed analysis of the composition of colostrum cream collected in two seasons (2022 and 2023), and evaluation of the protective and restorative efficacy of Westland colostrum cream when applied to healthy skin and artificially induced disrupted skin.
Proteins, peptides and metabolites were detected in the colostrum cream that would be supportive of use as a topically applied skincare ingredient, and in the human volunteer study significant improvements were observed in trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) results in both the healthy skin and restorative trials (indicating an improvement in skin barrier function). Together these results suggest Westland colostrum cream could be developed as a useful skincare ingredient.
Importantly for this proposed application, there were no meaningful difference observed between colostrum products collected in 2022 and 2023.
