Summary of Project and Key Findings:
The bivalve shell is an organo‐mineral composite, where the dominant mineral is calcium carbonate (CaCO3), which forms different crystal morphologies to suit specific purposes. This study aims to remove the organics present in green-lipped mussel and Pacific oyster shell matrix and extract high-purity CaCO3. Wet oxidation (WO) treatment has been widely used to remove organics from different types of waste materials. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction can indicate the reduction percentage of organics compared to the initial suspension. Moreover, the assay purity tests reveal the percentage purity of CaCO3. The X-ray Diffraction (XRD) patterns define the transformation of the preliminary aragonite phase into the calcite phase of CaCO3, along with the increase in WO reaction temperatures.
