Summary of Project and Key Findings:
Project BPA2035-02 was constituted to enhance a process already developed under BPA2035 to manufacture a clear, odour-free collagen hydrolysate powder from cull dairy cow hides, to manufacture a large batch of prototype product for clinical trials and to extend the process to the more challenging raw material: lamb skins.
Conditions were found under which ceramic microfiltration worked well – the high temperature clarification this permits makes the process safer microbiologically and better energetically. Sufficient bovine-derived product was made for clinical trials, under a formal Risk Management Programme to the high standard required for clinical trials. And the yield was improved over that of prior process variants.
The ovine raw material presents additional problems including the high fat content, the lower inherent yield and the presence of regions of skin resistant to gelatinisation and to enzymatic hydrolysis. In the one large experimental run within BPA2035 these problems presented less obviously than on earlier occasions, reducing the effectiveness of the experiment designed to combat them. However a new problem presented: a fine particle which passed a 50 um prefilter then reaggregated later. A new form of filter was designed and rapidly prototyped – this proved effective.
The bovine process is now ready for industrial implementation but we do not yet have a process robust enough to make consistent product from variable ovine raw materials at acceptable yield.
Summary of IP generated:
- A train of individually standard operations able to clarify hydrolysate very effectively over a sustained run with maximum energy efficiency and minimal microbiological risk.
- Sufficiently good estimates for key parameter values to permit engineering design of a full- scale process.
- Improved understanding of key processing differences between bovine and ovine skin raw materials.
