Summary of Project and Key Findings:
Two Panels of six healthy, mature dogs from the colony at the Centre for Canine Nutrition (Massey University, Palmerston North), were used in two trials which tested two different canine maintenance diets. The apparent nutrient digestibility of two Omega Plus New Zealand King Salmon Diets (New Zealand King Salmon with Beef Dry Adult Dog Food (Test diet 1) and New Zealand King Salmon with Beef and Brown Rice Wet Adult Dog Food (Test diet 2)) was assessed by the dogs using the AAFCO metabolizable energy protocol (AAFCO, 2023).
The two diets were tested in two 14-day periods with Test diet 1 tested in October 2023 and Test diet 2 tested in February 2024. The dogs were fed each diet exclusively during each apparent nutrient digestibility assessment.
Both diets exceeded the minimum AAFCO crude protein and crude fat levels.
The apparent macronutrient digestibility values obtained in the trial demonstrated that both diets had good levels of digestibly (Brown, 1987), and accurately defined the metabolisable energy contents of each diet
