Summary of Project and Key Findings (for public disclosure):
This project aimed to determine if potentially high-value compounds are present in the New Zealand geoducks Panopea zelandica. A literature review and lipid analysis were conducted on the geoduck skin, mantle, siphon and viscera.
The findings suggest that geoduck rejects may have high value lipids that could be used for developing an enriched lipid extract or concentrate.
Catalogue of IP Generated by the Project (kept confidential to the BPA):
N/A – analytical testing conducted only
Statement from the industry partner describing the business impact of the project (kept confidential to the BPA):
With at least 1 tonne of geoducks being rejected each year and this quantity increasing up to 5 tonnes in the future, full utilisation of geoducks for further use beyond low-value products is important for the sustainability of Waikai. These results provide a promising direction for further investigation – both into the market for possible products and into scaling up processing and product development. Waikai will consider options and seek further advice in the new year.
