Summary of Project and Key Findings:
Scion, in collaboration with, Plant and Food Research, the Cawthron Institute, and Callaghan Innovation, the project has confirmed the presence of valuable compounds in these waste streams from a process to extract nanocellulose from seaweed.
The primary goal of the investigation was to assess the potential value within the residual materials from our nanocellulose process. The findings, done at pilot-scale, has shown that these waste streams can be refined to extract useful high-value compounds, creating new co-product opportunities.
This development is a key step toward establishing a more circular system for Agrisea’s Seaweed Biorefinery. By processing these streams rather than treating them as waste, we can significantly improve the material efficiency and economic profile of the overall operation. The only remaining outputs are expected to be water and non-hazardous salts.
